چکیده

Background We studied the effect of exercise (7.2 to 8.0 km/h) on the efficiency of the conversion of metabolic energy to external work or stroke work (SW) by the left ventricle (LV). Methods and Results Energy use was calculated from LV myocardial oxygen consumption per beat (MVo2). LV volume was calculated from orthogonal dimensions and coronary flow measured with ultrasonic flow probes. The total mechanical energy of the LV was calculated as the pressure-volume area (PVA). At rest, the MVo2-PVA point fell on the MVo2-PVA relation determined by steady-state changes in arterial pressure produced by graded infusions of phenylephrine. Exercise increased the slope (Ees) of LV end-systolic pressure-volume (PV) relation by 29%. During exercise, the MVo2-PVA point shifted to the right only slightly above the control MVo2-PVA relation by 0.007±0.005 mL 02 beat` * 100 g LV`1. Despite the increase in ventricular contractility with exercise, the

Reference values of M-mode echocardiographic parameters and indices in conscious Labrador Retriever dogs

Breed-wise standard echocardiographic values in dogs have been reported as there is variation in body and chest conformation which limits the application of data of one breed for other breed. Labrador Retrievers being originated from hunting dogs, might have different echocardiographic values from standard normal range of other dog breeds. So, the present study was aimed to determine the M-mode...

Intravenous allopurinol decreases myocardial oxygen consumption and increases mechanical efficiency in dogs with pacing-induced heart failure.

Allopurinol, an inhibitor of xanthine oxidase, increases myofilament calcium responsiveness and blunts calcium cycling in isolated cardiac muscle. We sought to extend these observations to conscious dogs with and without pacing-induced heart failure and tested the prediction that allopurinol would have a positive inotropic effect without increasing energy expenditure, thereby increasing mechani...

Role of nitrergic input in mechanically and chemically induced gastric relaxation in conscious dogs.

Our aim was to study a role of nitrergic input in gastric relaxation in conscious dogs. Proximal gastric motor responses to mechanical distension and chemical stimulation (a lipid meal orally) were evaluated by electronic barostat. Effect of N(G)-monomethyl-L-arginine acetate (L-NMMA, 5 mg/kg) on these responses was studied. When mechanical stimulation was applied, we observed steep linear incr...

Short-term treatment with ranolazine improves mechanical efficiency in dogs with chronic heart failure.

The present study assesses whether ranolazine increases left ventricular (LV) function without an increase in myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) and thus improves LV mechanical efficiency in dogs with heart failure (HF). Ranolazine did not change MVO2 and LV mechanical efficiency increased (22.4+/-2.8% to 30.9+/-3.4% (P<0.05). In contrast, dobutamine significantly increased MVO2 and did not i...

Lack of desensitization and enhanced efficiency of calcium channel promoter in conscious dogs with heart failure.

The goal of this study was to compare responses to a calcium promoter, BAY y 5959, and dobutamine (Dob) in heart failure (HF). Dogs ( n = 9) were chronically instrumented and studied in the conscious state before and after pacing-induced HF. In the control state, BAY y 5959 (20 μg ⋅ kg-1 ⋅ min-1) increased the first derivative of left ventricular (LV) pressure (dP/d t) by 83 ± 8% and mean arter...

Flow in Conscious Dogs

Background Although epicardial coronary arteries dilate in response to changes in flow, the mechanisms responsible for this and the mechanical stimuli that are sensed by the endothelium are not completely defined. We performed the present study to determine the importance of nitric oxide in eliciting epicardial dilation to sustained changes in mean flow and pulse frequency in the coronary circu...
